FORMAT International Photography Festival

Several of my images were chosen by the curators for the biennale FORMAT International Photography Festival that took place in Derby UK between 8 March and 7 April 2013.

The main theme of FORMAT13 was centred on the FACTORY and mass production.

I lived in Oslo in Norway for 5 years and for some of that time worked for the Norwegian Employment service photographing in factories, building sites and offices. Norway is one of the wealthiest and technologically advanced countries in the world, and with lots of automation and very high health and safety standards etc, but physical work and production still has to be done just like many much poorer countries and often in very harsh conditions.

FORMAT is the UK’s leading international contemporary photography festival. Since it was founded in 2004 it has grown from strength to strength. FORMAT is curated by Louise Clements, Artistic Director of QUAD and FORMAT, and its patrons include the photographer Brian Griffin. The festival presented over 200 international artists through exhibitions, a conference, talks, tours, master classes, special events and participation projects. It was curated in multiple venues throughout the city, with QUAD at its centre.
